In order to understand the impact of COVID-19 on the delivery of social care services to the elderly (70 and above) by small, local organizations, we investigated their responses. The acquired knowledge from previous experiences and its future relevance are discussed herein.
Four social care services, represented by six individuals (five women and one man), engaged in individual, semi-structured interviews. A structured thematic interpretation of the responses was implemented.
Central to the identified key themes were service provider experiences, the perceived necessities of older adults, and the adjustment of services. For service providers, their commitment to the elderly clients' welfare, as essential workers, translated into emotional toll and distress. To ensure their older adult clients remained connected, they offered information, wellness checks, and assistance within the comfort of their own homes.
Preparedness for future restrictions is expressed by service providers, but their remarks highlight the necessity of training and support specifically aimed at helping older adults use technology for connection. Furthermore, they underscore the need for greater access to funding to facilitate rapid adjustments to service offerings during emergencies.
Feeling better prepared for upcoming restrictions, service providers still point to the need for educational opportunities and assistance programs for older adults to become more proficient in using technology for maintaining social connections and the crucial need for more readily available financial resources to allow for prompt service adjustments during times of crisis.
